Systema Downtown is a Russian Martial Art School located in downtown Toronto at The Fighting Arts Collective of Toronto (FACT). Classes are led by Paul McCaughey, who is an instructor and student of RMA co-founder Vladimir Vasiliev. Paul has also been successfully training students and instructors in Traditional Yang Style T’ai Chi Ch’uan in Toronto since 1984 and is a Doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Systema Downtown uses a combination of regular classes and bi-monthly seminars with world class RMA instructors to achieve a versatile curriculum. Our broadly experienced in house and guest faculty provide a stimulating and challenging learning experience. This unique approach allows Systema Downtown to cater to RMA students from home and abroad, as well as cross-training martial artists. “Systema is ideally suited to people of all ages and aptitudes. Systema emphasizes natural movements normal to children's play, coupled with Russian breathing exercises and basic conditioning, which builds stamina on a physical, emotional and spiritual level. Systema is not a style of self-defense, as each person builds their own style based on their unique capacity. Normal fears of impact from falling or strikes are dealt with from the beginning through and intelligent layered approach to movement drills. Learning is peer driven. Each partner helps the other fulfill the ideas explained by the instructor. There are no techniques in Systema, just the immediacy of learning from your own good sense how to escape and ultimately control aggression through relaxation. Sound interesting to you? Try a class and see for yourself. Battle proven as self-defense by the Russian military, Systema contributes most of all to one’s lifestyle.”(copyright, 2006: sytemadowntown)

WHAT THE MEDIA SAYS
Toronto Sun: Formerly used by the elite Russian Special Forces, "The System" is a one-of-a-kind self-defense program with no holds barred, serious sweat sessions and practical instruction to boot.
Toronto Star: The System is based on intuitive reactions: what your brain tells you when the adrenalin is pumping at full force. Students master defense against all forms of attack, including kicks, punches, chokes and holds. Students practice overcoming multiple attackers simultaneously, and learn to fight sitting, lying down and blindfolded.
Black Belt Magazine: The system stresses a realistic approach to self-defense, recognizing that real conflicts bear no resemblance to what occurs in the comfort of a training facility. Techniques are based on the natural movement of the body rather than a prearranged pattern of moves, such as a karate kata. Students act on instinct, rather than memory, when responding to an attack.
Combat Magazine What stands out in The System is the ultra-fast learning curve, the incredible simplicity of the techniques, complete freedom of movement and the emphasis on continual attacks as well as economy of motion. Unpredictable moves against single and multiple opponents in any situation, in any environment. The best part is that you are also able to integrate this into your own art and use its relaxed and circular movement, which is similar to ju jitsu, aikido and other arts.
